Worlds Apart

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRf3wceipLw Empire State of Alicia Keys

Very little to report on the Fishing scene this week as I have just returned from a wonderful trip to the United States in order to celebrate My Wife's 40th Birthday. We both had Great Time and spent some quality time together on both Manhattan Island , plus a few days drinking Tea in Boston , Massachusetts. It amazes me , Normally I just want to escape from it all , The Rat Race , People and Society in general , so why would I want to go to one of the most crowded places on Earth. Well , quite simply , in My Book The Big Apple is just Unique and Very Special. The Whole Vibe of the place combined with some incredible Architecture and it's Multi Cultural society all add to making New York what it is plus it is one big movie set that you have grown up with. Since 9/11 , it is quiet possibly The Safest Place on Earth. Everyone should be given a free pass when they are born just to go and explore the place. It is quite simply , One Big Adventure.
While I was there , I did manage to have a chat with some locals whilst they were fishing just below the Brooklyn Bridge on the East River. I saw a boat just of The Statue of Liberty in the Hudson River that uncannily resembled " The Fury ". There must have been twenty rods hanging of the side of it ensuring it resembled a Floating Game of Kurplunk, lol.
It wont be long now. June 16 Th will soon be with us and fially The Shackles , of The River Anglers amongst us , will be broken , allowing The River Anglers amongst us to get back to some real living breathing water. Having said that , most of the Rivers in the North West of England , as with other parts of the country are painfully low at the moment and we really could do a month's worth of rain just to inject some life back into them. The South and Middle England is noticably Brown as my low level Heathrow to Manchester flight proved last week.
I tend not to get to excited about June these days as it normally is a bit of a let down. Most fish are still recovering from their spawning activities. If the levels remain low , I will even for-go any Barbel trips as the fish will be just sat in fastest glides requiring all their strength and energy for survival. The last thing they need , is a run around the block on the end of an Anglers Line. Let's hope The Country as a whole receives some much needed precipitation , Very Soon.
I have been out since my return and had two short trips to local venues. One was spent chasing a PB Grass Carp for Bruce but unfortunately we failed , the Grass Carp were somewhat on edge and I guess someone else ha been chasing them during the previous week. The Welsh Wizard however did manage a Super Marked Koi Carp to a floating Dog Biscuit from another pool so at least we were not a couple of blankers.
I also had a morning trip to The Crucian Carp Water that I had been targeting before my recent trip to Ireland. It had been a tough week. My Lad had been involved in a Car Accident and I had spent most of my break sorting the whole mess out. Fortunately No One was Injured , only some pride some of it mine. The Piece of metal was subsequently crushed and My Lad now has a push bike as a mode of transport. It took me a few days to come down off the roof but once it was all done and dusted I knew exactly where I needed to be.

From previous trips I had sussed out that this would be a morning adventure. Very little usually happened after midday. I went armed with my favourite bait of all time maggots plus a bucket of brown crumb. I should of had some sweetcorn but there had been a party at our house whilst Lou and I had been a way and someone had eaten my whole fishing stash, Doh. It didn't really matter , Maggots would do the trick I was sure.

I arrived at 05.30 am and had the place to myself , Fantastic !!. This was a far cry from the recent hustle and bustle. I went for a quick walk to see if anything was showing and sure enough saw three good Crucian Carp roll on a favoured spot. That was it , the wind was blowing in just the right direction and my mind was made up.

The ground bait and maggots was distributed in two spots , close together. I would use a tiny 3 x no 4 waggler float on one rod and a feeder rod on the bottom below the float . This would be set up with the aid of an optonic bite alarm. Using this method I could fish the float whilst being alerted to any good takes on the lead rod that would be fished on a size 10 hook and a multitude of maggots. Float tactics were simple , 2 lb Drennan Double Strength line with a tiny 18 Barbless hook and double red maggot as bait.

The plan worked and I was soon into my first fish of the day , a Crucian of 8 ozs. After that the fish came steadily as the morning progressed right up until midday when everything as usual just tailed off. Ten maggots or so were trickled in on a little and often frequency just to keep the fish interested and active.I was in for a Great Time and I did manage some great fish. The best of these was a swollen Brown Goldfish that was set to burst being full of spawn. I estimated at the time that She would go 2 1/2 lbs but was amazed when the scales swung round to a staggering 3 lb 9 ozs. I was Chuffed to bits. I also had two other Goldfish of 2 lbs 9 ozs and 2 lbs 7 ozs , plus some really good Crucians just shy of the 2 lb mark. It had been just what the doctor had ordered and I was back in My Angling Mode once more. It never takes me long , I guess it's just like riding a bike , You never forget. And so , I have a week of work to go at , that will guarantee that I am off to welcome The Glorious 16th. I already know my river venue and I am itching to get back to My Beloved Rivers where I really belong.

Until then " Tight Lines " Roamers and A Very Happy June 16 th. Still a Very Special Date for Anglers Everywhere !!!
